IFHE-US

A Message from the President

Mary Andrews

Greetings from your newly inducted President! I come before you to ask for your continuing support and involvement. We have a wonderfully committed set of officers to guide our work in the upcoming years and a legacy of accomplishments left by our outgoing President, Juanita Mendenhall and the inaugural Board. Just six years ago we came to life as a fully affiliated unit of IFHE. And in those few brief years we have stabilized, matured and grown. Luckily we have had some very strong leaders and a number of members ready to help. We have taken on the challenges of establishing a constitution and 501-3C status. We have organized hardworking committees that have created major maintenance efficiencies and have guided the organization to pursue a number of major projects—the Millennium Park Involvement in Ghana, Project Identify and Recognize, the IFHE-US Development Fund, the History Project, International “matching or twinning” and the IYF Anniversary celebration. We supported our regional organization in hosting the regional meetings in Puerto Rico in 1998 and in Texas in 2002 and contributed to thinking about regional structures. And we have invested in our international organization, helping it transition to a new location and rebuild its fiscal and programmatic integrity. We are in a strong position to move forward and make our organization all that it can be.

President’s Message, continued

Business Update: During our annual Board of Directors Meeting in San Diego in June we asked for a few constitutional changes—a change in the composition of the “Board” to identify a Past President’s position and a re-quest to include “appointed” committee chairs as well as “elected” officers and the AAFCS International Division Chair as voting members. Another major item of Board discussion was a continuing concern about our membership records. Two parallel systems exist to accept membership dues—directly to our Treasurer or through the AAFCS membership renewal system. This latter system bills members throughout the calendar year and thus creates difficulties in counting current members, in verifying whether dues have been received in Bonn, and in taking action when members default in their dues payments. On the plus side, this duel billing for AAFCS and IFHE-US is a convenience to members and a cost-saver for our budget. The Board has been working closely with the AAFCS staff to strengthen communications and record sharing. Thanks to those involved for their commitment to improving the system!

We also thank you, our membership, for your acceptance of the emergency decision to raise dues this past spring. Our Board realized that with the lopsided Euro-dollar exchange rates that our IFHE-US share of our international dues had not only diminished, but it brought us into a negative balance situation. We were using our reserves just to pay our international dues! The $15 increase for individual members and $100 increase for organizational members enacted in May helps to keep us solvent in the future, but does not replenish the treasury. So we need to be even more conscientious with our planning and budgeting. The 2004 and proposed 2005 annual budget is presented in this newsletter (Page 6) for your scrutiny.

(See Communications Update column 2)

(Communications Update)

Communications Update: Communications between members and the Board, between the organization and our partners and on multiple planes within the organization is a major challenge for any organization. Communica-tions is the lifeblood of our organization—the glue that keeps us together and the nourishment that keeps us healthy. Luckily we have multiple modes of communications—face-to-face at major events, via phone and E-mail, especial- ly to make announcements and transact business, and the most relied-upon, our periodic print newsletter and increasingly our Website. www.ifhe-us.org Each mode of communications is being studied to use it to best advantage. Data from the membership survey conducted last spring by our Professional Development and Program Chair, Joanne Pearson, suggested that although the annual meeting was felt to be an important opportunity for interaction, in fact, very few members actually attend! The reality is that our most regular and reliable form of interaction is the newsletter! The Board would welcome suggestions on how to make our fall and spring newsletters more substantive and our website more interactive. We need strategies to share members’ ideas and activities. A major revamping of our newsletter is underway and work on our website will be a major plan-of-work objective for the next few years.

Cornell to hold IFHE-US Archives

AAFCS files are to be archived at Cornell University.  With the BOD’s agreement IFHE-US has been granted permission to deposit the organization’s records there as well along with the AAFCS records.  This process began this past spring.

IFHE-US Plan of Work 2004-2006

Joanne Pearson

Director of Professional Development & Programs

Goal One: Strengthen communications and networks

·         Continue to communicate to members through fall and spring newsletters and increasingly rely on electronic communications to distribute these newsletters and other timely information to the membership.

·         Hold periodic conference calls with IFHE-US Board members to enhance communications among officers and promote timely actions on organizational matters.

·         Develop and use the IFHE-US web site to communicate with members and potential members.

·         Design an invoice for IFHE dues and send the hard copy invoice to all organizational members of IFHE in a timely manner. Invoice to be sent both to currently paying members and those who have not paid in recent years.

·         Enlarge and encourage use of the electronic membership information system. Continue to update records and to try to reconcile records routinely with the IFHE directory in Bonn and with AAFCS headquarters.

·         Compile “Policies and Procedures” publication to assist the Board members in carrying out their duties. The document will include guidelines for the newly approved position of “Past President”.

·         Continue to work with colleagues in AAFCS International Division to clarify and support the different roles and opportunities offered by the parallel organizations.

·         Continue to host and co-host various internationally oriented networking events at AAFCS Annual Meeting.

·         Contribute to the work of the United Nations by representing the voice of the profession and communicate important developments and issues from the UN to the membership through such means as articles in the IFHE-US newsletter, AAFCS publications, program sessions at AAFCS Annual Meeting and workshops held at the UN, such as in February prior to the Commission on the Status of Women meeting.

Additional News

A quick note about other activities, some of which will be highlighted in this newsletter:

·         The annual meeting in June was well attended and full of progress reports (minutes available on the Web)

·         The 20th World Congress in Kyoto was very successful and an exciting opportunity to reflect on our profession.

·         Activities related to the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family are well underway. Project “Identify and Recognize” hosted a second successful recognition ceremony for Home Economists in the military.

·         The IFHE-US Development Fund hosted an intimate fund raising reception in San Diego and unveiled the exquisite “quilt” assembled by Carolyn Blount that was raffled-off in Kyoto.

·         Business is running smoothly in the new offices of the IFHE headquarters in Bonn. Our President of the past four years, Gertraud Pichler (Austria) handed over the reins of leadership to incoming President, Lilha Lee (Korea).

·         Two IFHE-US members received the highest honors bestowed in our profession—the AAFCS Distinguished Service Award. Congratulations Karen Goebel and Nancy Leidenfrost!

o        Nancy St. John replaced Joyce Richardson and interim Kinsey Green in the Director of Communications role

o        Kitty Decker replaces Sharon Christie in the Recorder role

o        Sharon McManus replaces Nancy Leidenfrost in the role of Director of the IFHE-US Development Fund, and

Dear Colleagues,

No words can express my gratitude for your generous contributions to the IFHE-US Development Fund.  You embraced and established a fund that over time will maximize our outreach to serve the global community.

You turned a development concept into a reality in your commitment to serve others.  You expanded IFHE’s international vision to serve new audiences.  The achievement of $60,000 plus is virtually enlightening and a great statement of your love of humanity.

IFHE Development Fund Grant, 2004

Carolyn Blount, Chair

IFHE Development Fund Grant

According to Nancy Leidenfrost, who first

conceived of the idea, and first chaired the International Federation for Home Economics Development Fund, it was 12 years from its inception to offering the first grant at the IFHE meeting in Kyoto in August of 2004.

By 2000 in Ghana, five countries had established their own individual Development Funds: Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Norway, and the United States. Carolyn Blount took over the chairmanship that year, and since, Ireland and South Korea have established funds.  Only interest generated from the funds is to be used to finance IFHE grants, and the principal amount will always remain in the country of origin.  This year, for the first time, the IFHE-US fund was large enough to sponsor a grant ranging from $1000-$3000.

A Development Fund application form was developed and made available at the Region of the Americas Meeting and at Council in Helsinki in 2002.  It was also on the IFHE web page under "What¹s New" and on the IFHE-US web page.
Three applications were received by the deadline one from St. Lucia and two from Guyana.  These were immediately sent to members of the selection committee, a group of past IFHE presidents plus one additional member.

(Continued column 2)

Those serving on the panel were:
Janice Archibald, Guyana
 Doris Badir, Canada
 Margaret Dalloway, England
 Margaret Fitch, Oklahoma, USA

The committee read, made specific comments, and ranked the three applications from first to last position.  While they were not unanimous, there was a clear first position, and the other two were nearly tied and considerably lower than the winning grant.
A fourth application from Brazil arrived a month later, too late to consider.

The IFHE-US met at Annual Meeting in San Diego on Saturday, June 26 and voted to fund the winning grant, but not to fund the second and third place grants. It is hoped that in the future, more countries will apply, and that if supported by other developed countries holding Development Funds, more and/or larger grants can be funded.

Carolyn Blount, chair, announced the winning grant at Congress in Kyoto.  It is the St. Lucia Home Economics Association for Banana Artistry, for Primary School Leavers.  Nancy Leidenfrost will transfer the funds to Norma Maynard and Rita Dyer, project directors at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.

A written report of the quilt project and Development Fund Grant with copies of each of the proposals and the selection committee evaluations was available at the quilt raffle table for all participants to view. Application Forms for 2008, were also available.  A copy of the report was presented to President Pichler.

Strow Award Presented in Kyoto

The Helen Strow International Service Award was established by the College of Human Ecology at The Ohio State University to recognize individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to their respective home country or have a record of distinguished leadership in the field of Home Economics at the international level.

Jenny Schroeder of the College of Human Ecology, The Ohio State University announced the most recent recipient of this prestigious award at the 20th World Congress in Kyoto, Japan.  Patricia Thunder of Ireland was recognized for her long-time work in her home country of Ireland and IFHE.  Ms. Ireland served on the IFHE Executive Committee and was responsible for the work of the Education and Training Program Committee.  One of her main activities was to found the International Book Fair.

6

(Goal One, continued)

·         Continue to assist and support efforts of “Project Identify and Recognize”, whereby home economists who have served in the United States military are identified, thus adding to the history of the profession.

·         Hold elections to replace Board of Directors

Goal Two: Provide educational services and support for international involvement of members.

·         Create multiple avenues of outreach to educate and inform members of important international issues, events and opportunities (i.e. AAFCS publications and web site, IFHE-US publications and web site, sessions at AAFCS annual meeting)

·         Encourage IFHE-US member involvement at the international level through participation in IFHE committee work and participation in and attendance at international events (Programme and Council committees, Caribbean Home Economics meeting in 2005). IFHE-US will be represented at the IFHE Council in South Africa in 2006 with voting delegates.

·         Promote opportunities for both individuals and groups to create viable exchanges with peers internationally, and promote and highlight “Twinning” projects involving IFHE-US organizational members. These projects may be expanded to become “Outreach within the Americas” connections that result in the development of new active home economics organizations within the Region of the Americas.

·         Promote activities nationally and at state levels related to International Day for

Home Economics and 10th Anniversary celebrations of the “International Year of the Family”.

·         Continue to provide assistance to the Student Section of AAFCS and explore ways for IFHE-US to become better known to the student members, and to encourage their membership in IFHE-US.

·         Continue to prepare materials for the 100th anniversary of IFHE in 2008.

Goal Three: Contribute to the IFHE-Development Fund

·         Raise $12,000 by 2008, bringing the fund that earns interest to support special projects throughout the world to $75,000.

·         Include a letter requesting contributions to the IFHE-US Development fund in the Fall issues of the IFHE-US Connection.

·         Hold an educational fundraising event in connection with AAFCS Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN in 2005 and Charlotte, NC in 2006.

·         Publicize the new address for the IFHE-US Development Fund in the newsletter and on the IFHE-US website.

Goal Four:  Develop long-range plans for meeting the professional development needs of members.

·         Begin to plan professional develop programs based on results of all-member survey conducted in 2003.

·         Explore ways to develop persons for leadership roles in the organization at national regional and international levels.

·         Begin development of programs for student members of IFHE-US and student and professional international exchanges.

Dear IFHE-US Member,

The IFHE Development Fund awarded its first grant to St. Lucia at the IFHE World Congress in Kyoto, Japan on August 7.  While the United States is one of the countries supporting this fund, this special action in Kyoto was possible because of your contributions.  This $3,000 grant was from interest accumulated since the inception of the fund in 1996. The principal is kept intact.

We are pleased to inform you that we reached our goal of $60,000 before the Congress in Japan.  Our new goal is to reach $75,000 by 2008 to fund more projects.  Your commitment to the IFHE goals and your monetary gifts help us achieve our global mission.  We thank you for your ongoing support.  All contributions are tax deductible.

The IFHE-US Development Fund will have an educational program and fundraising event on Wednesday, June 22 in St. Paul, Minnesota.  We hope that you will put this date on your calendar.  Details will be included in AAFCS registration information, IFHE-US website, and this spring newsletter.

HELP IS URGENTLY NEEDED In GRENADA!

About a week after this most devastating hurricane to ever hit the island of Grenada, I received an email from my former student and friend teaching home economics at Sir Arthur Lewis College in St.Lucia. It was an urgent request for any possible help we could give, particularly for the girls she had living in her basement whose homes and some family members were destroyed by the hurricane.  They desperately needed drinking water tablets, medical supplies, and food. I was able to reach her by the cell phone number she gave me and learned more of the extreme destruction and the lack of even the most basic survival items.  She also mentioned needing candles, flashlights and batteries, sanitary products, and even clothes because most had only had what they were wearing.  She was working daily with the Red Cross but not nearly enough help was coming in to keep people safe. They had nearly nothing left to work from for infrastructure.

I talked to many friends here in the states and home economists from the Caribbean Association of Home Economists, particularly Theodora Alexander, CAHE Treasurer from Trinidad and Janice Archibald, CAHE President.  We came to the conclusion that if we could collect donations through IFHE-US and get them to Theodora and some of the home economists in Trinidad, they would purchase as much as they could on island and that Girl Guides could get them to Rachael at the Department of Education in Grenada where she is a minister in charge of school food services.  She said it will be some time before most schools can reopen because they are being used to house families with nowhere else to live.  (When they do reopen, they will have to refurnish everything as well as repair most structures, and we may have another call to help them at that time.)  This plan will get the most supplies to Grenada with the least cost because we won't pay extra for postage and buying in Trinidad will be good for their economy, too.

If you can help with this project it will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.  I know this is a safe way to help directly.  Please send your donation to: IFHE-US (Disaster Assistance), Nancy Billings, Treasurer, 706 Corlett Dr., Huntsville, Al 35802-1906.  If you have questions, please email or call me: Juanita Mendenhall, juanitam@usit.net or 803-337-4012.  We hope to send the money collected this week to them at the beginning of next week, October 18, because they are in such dire straits. We can send more later if it comes in later, of course. Thank you for any financial help you are able to give.  I know it will mean a great deal to them.  Since IFHE-US is a 501(c)3, your donation is tax deductible.

Another possible way to help that Rachael indicated was a big need is by sending used clothing, especially for children and teens.  She said it can now safely be sent by Federal Express to her in c/o Rachael Mathurine, Grenada Ministry of Education, St. George's, Grenada.

Thanks you very much for considering how you might help with this request. Please feel free to forward this to others that you know.

Best Regards,

Juanita Mendenhall, Past President, IFHE-US

International Division Chair, SCAFCS
