RESOLUTION

passed by Congress and Council in Accra/Ghana, July 2000

 

 

A New Century. Focus on the Future

 

The expanding Role of Home Economics

- in ensuring food security

- in initiating an International Year

   of Food Security

 

 

WHEREAS

 

-          the right to food was enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948;

-          this right has been and continues to be violated;

-          the World Bank data states that more than 1.3 billion people currently live in absolute poverty or the equivalent of $ 1.00 (US) or less a day while another 2 billion are only marginally better off;

-          increasing environmental degradation further threatens food security;

-          at the World Food Summit held in Rome in 1996, a global target was set ``reducing the number of undernourished people to half their present level (more than 800 million) no later than 2015´´;

-          food security makes a vital contribution to human development

 


WHEREAS

 

Home Economics and in particular of the Home Economics Leadership Initiative in Food Security Workshop, held in Accra, Ghana, are committed to finding ways to ensure food security as an integral component of the health and the well being of families and households.

 

BE IT RESOLVED

that IFHE proposes to the United Nations an International Year of Food Security.
