A New Century. Focus on the Future
The expanding Role of Home
Economics
- in
ensuring food security
- in
initiating an International Year
of Food Security
-
the right to food was enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights by the United Nations in 1948;
-
this right has been and continues to be violated;
-
the World Bank data states that more than 1.3 billion people currently
live in absolute poverty or the equivalent of $ 1.00 (US) or less a day while
another 2 billion are only marginally better off;
-
increasing environmental degradation further threatens food security;
-
at the World Food Summit held in Rome in 1996, a global target was set
``reducing the number of undernourished people to half their present level
(more than 800 million) no later than 2015´´;
-
food security makes a vital contribution to human development
that IFHE proposes to the United Nations an International Year of Food
Security.
