Resolution 1999

for the United Nations International Year of Older Persons

Whereas the International Federation for Home Economics recognizes the integral role of older persons in the social and economic life of families in society; and

Whereas IFHE affirms that older persons have the right to live in dignity and maintain quality of life, and be productive members of the society; and

Whereas diverse family and community structures are essential to the care and support of older persons; and

Whereas Home Economists are involved in research, policies and programmes related to physical, mental, economic, social and spiritual well being of older persons.

Be it resolved that IFHE plans and supports research, policies and programmes to advocate and recognize the rights and needs of the aged and recognize that older persons should:

* maintain independence as long as possible;
* participate in decision-making as it affects themselves and society wherever possible;
* interact with all generations in order to achieve respect and understanding;
* be cared for with dignity; and
* have self-fulfillment to the extent possible.
